The Photo

Here you see city of Makarska as any tourist should see it.
I had a vision how it should look like and I woke up at 6:00 am that morning to finalize it. As the city authorities placed this St. Peter's statue I knew it is going to be remarkable photo with the statue in the first plan and Makarska's old city as a background.
I shot this from St. Peter peninsula which is one of two (left one when looking from the sea) peninsulas that you pass through when entering the port from a seaside. I used wide angle lens to keep everything in the frame and got really lucky with the sailing ship in the lower right corner filling the frame fantastically!

To avoid sun flare on the lens I had to take a shot with finger accros the sun and then blend two images manually in Photoshop. This technique works really good.

What I really admire about this photo is that you get a strong sense of context, you feel as if you are experiencing the same observations the photographer did. Whether it was intentional or not, its great that you captured the boats moving, it shows how this area would seem like, like any other day. The statue, it was a wise choice that you captured it from behind/side, because it makes it part of the scene and not the Primal focal point even though it is somewhat a focal point since its in the foreground and the sharpest. (sorry for run on sentences).

Suggestions, I am surprised that you took the shot at f22 WITH a .9ND filter. I understand that you had strong sunshine, But even for a sunny day, my f stop is only at 7.1 or 8.0, and this is with a ND4 (.9ND) filter + flash + very sunny conditions, and I wont get any flare. The reason I say this is because once you start to hit low f-stops, details of your image start to get lost since it becomes grainy, and where that occurs in your photo are the homes and buildings in the Background, but I maybe completely wrong since you did take it at 10mm. Thats my only pet peeve in this photo.

You should try to submit this photo to their tourism board, I am pretty sure they would take it and publish it for you.

Keep it up!

jako lijep kadar i dinamički raspon. isto tako jako dobro pogođena ekspozicija (što u ovakvim uvjetima svi znamo - nije lako :) )

this is so cool!!! i love the way the sun is coming over the mountain in rays :) it gives off a good feeling, like we're stepping up there with you and experiencing what you are when you look at the scenery. i think the fact that you took the picture from the back of the statue helps that, because it's not just a typical picture of the front side of a statue. i really like this :)

This is fantastic. Where did you position the hard line of the filter? Very sharp and your composition is great.

France, what a marvelous shot. My fiance has been an artist since his teens; however; he has developed fibromyalgia. I'm buying him a camera online and it is a canon. This shot to include everything you used a wide angle lens. I am a novice at this photography and I always appreciate the artist's comments below the artwork. I saved it as a fave and I'm going to show it to Gino when he wakes up. His link is on my main page, he was an amazing artist..
